Hardwood floors are a timeless investment—but they need a little love to keep their natural beauty shining year after year. Whether you’ve just installed new planks or want to extend the life of your existing flooring, proper care is key.
At Simply Dynamic Floors, we’ve installed thousands of hardwood floors across Calgary and know exactly what works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to maintenance. Here are our top wood floor maintenance tips to keep your space looking polished and pristine.
When it comes to how to clean hardwood, gentle is always better. Avoid soaking your floors or using all-purpose cleaners—many contain chemicals that can strip the finish or dull the surface.
Do:
Use a microfiber mop or soft broom for daily dust
Clean spills immediately with a damp (not wet) cloth
Use hardwood-specific cleaners for deeper cleaning
Don’t:
Use vinegar, bleach, or steam mops
Soak the floor—excess moisture = damage over time
Prevention is easier than repair. A few smart habits can drastically reduce wear and tear.
Tips:
Use felt pads under furniture legs
Place mats at entryways to catch grit, salt, and moisture
Keep pet nails trimmed
Avoid walking in high heels or cleats on hardwood
Bonus: Add area rugs in high-traffic zones to preserve the finish.
Hardwood is a natural material, and it expands and contracts with changes in humidity. Calgary’s dry winters can be especially hard on wood floors.
What to do:
Use a humidifier in winter to keep humidity between 35–55%
Avoid letting indoor air get too dry—this can cause boards to shrink or crack
Keep blinds closed during extreme sunlight to prevent fading
It may sound simple, but regular cleaning prevents dust and dirt from scratching the surface.
Sweep or dust-mop daily in busy areas
Use a vacuum with a hardwood setting (no beater bar)
Clean under furniture and rugs weekly
Even with perfect care, all hardwood floors show wear eventually. But that doesn’t always mean you need a full refinish.
Recoat: A fresh topcoat applied every 3–5 years can restore shine and protection without sanding
Refinish: Needed if the wood is deeply scratched, discoloured, or worn down to bare wood
Tip: Recoating is faster, cleaner, and more affordable—don’t wait until it’s too late.
If you have engineered hardwood, follow the same care tips. Just note that engineered planks can only be refinished once or twice (if at all), depending on the thickness of the top layer.
Proper hardwood floor care isn’t complicated—it’s about consistency, climate control, and using the right products. By following these tips, you’ll keep your floors looking brand new for years to come—and protect the value they add to your home.
